Weekly Update

9/21/18
Hello Western Hills Community,
There is a lot going on right now at WHMS, so please take a few minutes to look over all of the following information…  don’t forget that Picture Day is on Monday!
PTO Walkathon
Our annual Walkathon is scheduled for October 19 at the Cranston West track.  This is the biggest fundraiser that our PTO does all year. Our PTO uses the funds to support teaching and learning here at Western Hills.  Please see the important attachments for the Walkathon.
Student Council
Our new Student Council adviser is Mrs. Zukowksi.  She will be holding a meeting for any 8th grade student interested in running for student council executive board offices of president, vice president, secretary, or treasurer on Tuesday, September 25th in the auditorium.   Elections for team representatives will be announced at a later date. Sixth and seventh grade students are not eligible for the executive board but they can run for team representatives.
The meeting will be brief but students should arrange for a ride home in case they miss their bus.
Open House
Open House is on Wednesday and Thursday of next week at 7:00 pm.  Sixth and seventh grade is on Wednesday and eighth grade is on Thursday.  Your child will come home with a schedule of the evening prior to the Open House.
Tribute to a Fallen Hero
A pilot, who was shot down in Vietnam, will finally be returning home to Cranston.  Lt. Col. Fredric Moore Mellor’s remains will be going by Western Hills Middle School at approximately 12:30 pm on Wednesday, September 26th.  We will bringing students out to the edge of our property at that time in order to pay tribute to him. Students that have third lunch that day will not be able to attend because that is their lunch time. However, we will allow any of them to go if they are fine with leaving lunch early.
Students should consider what they wear to school that day.  It might be nice if students got dressed up to show their respect to this war hero.
Next week is a 5 day school week!

Have a great weekend!

9/15/18
Hello Western Hills community,
This week the Western Hills administration met with all students and layed out our expectations for the school year.  We also reviewed school and district rules and policies. At this point, all students should know that we expect them to follow the Cobra Code:
Cooperative
On task
Be prepared
Respectful and Responsible
Accountable
We are stressing kindness this year.  We want kids to know that it does not take much for them to do their best to be kind to everyone.  You never know what your kind words or actions can do for another person. One great example, witnessed by Mr. Ruggieri, occurred in the lunchroom.  A student was standing there with his lunch and looking uncomfortable and not knowing where he should sit. A group of students noticed this, and not only did they invite him to sit down, they included him in their conversations.
Yesterday we showed a video about kindness to our 8th grade students.  Since our 6th and 7th grade students did not see it, I sent the video to our teachers and suggested that they show it in Advisory.  Here is the link to the video:

Walkathon
Our annual Walkathon is coming up on October 19th.  The entire school will head out to the Cranston West track that morning as part of our PTO’s biggest fundraiser of the year.  Last year the PTO used funds from the Walkathon to support teaching and learning here at Western Hills by purchasing books, furniture, computers, and other items.
Please see the attachments for important Walkathon documents, including the permission slip!
Day One/Rhode Island Hospital
We are continuing our relationship and our work with Day One and Rhode Island Hospital.  The title is “Promoting Healthy Relationships in Middle Schools”. Researchers will be coming to our school to survey both faculty and students.  Last year Day One made presentations to our faculty and we will planning an event for parents as well. I have attached information about the program as well as the parent opt-out letter.  Please sign and return the documents only if you DO NOT want your child to participate in the survey. The students will be surveyed some time during the week of October 9th. We will also make the opt-out form available on our school website soon as well.
Sports
Our teams will all be starting their seasons really soon.  On Tuesday, the boys’ soccer team will be on the road on at Scituate and the girls’ soccer team will be taking on Scituate here at home.  The cross country team has a race tomorrow here at Western Hills against the other city teams and our unified cross country team will be on the road on September 26th at Cole Middle School in East Greenwich.
