From the desk of Mr. Vesey

10/20/17
Hello Western Hills community,
What a beautiful day for the Walkathon!  I cannot thank our PTO enough for all of their hard work and dedication to Western Hills Middle School!  Thanks to Mrs. Ginolfi and the rest of the PTO, we raised $9934.10.  Although we are just short (maybe we can still get there…?) of our goal of $10,000, we are thrilled and very thankful to all of those that donated.

Grade 7: HR 223, Mrs. Nigrelli - $585

We will be accepting t-shirt designs for the t-shirt contest until Monday.

Go Orange
Next Friday, October 27th, Western Hills will be participating in Go Orange, along with many other Cranston schools, to raise awareness about childhood hunger.  Students and staff should wear orange (no Halloween costumes) that day and bring in money and/or canned goods.  See the attachment for more information about Go Orange.

Art Opportunities
ATTENTION S2 ART STUDENTS!  If you are interested in some upcoming poster contests please see your Semester 2 art teacher for more information.  You can also see Ms. Budz period 1 on Tuesdays or  Mrs. Cox, period 1 on Thursdays.  If you do not know who you have for art in S2, check on Aspen.  You may have to switch your schedule from S1 to S2 or to FY.  Students that currently have art, should talk to their art teacher.
Contest themes are "Qualities of a Healthy Relationship." First prize is $500. This is for the Cranston school district.
The other contest is NATIONAL and it a STEAM event with 3-4 innovative themes for your age group. We want you to have the same advantages as our S1 art students, so come see what it's all about.

Yearbooks (yes, already…)
Yearbooks are on sale!!!  $22 BEFORE Winter break!  Get yours before the price increases.  Online sales only... CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE.  We will NOT be taking orders for yearbooks in school.  They must be purchased online.

Science Olympiad
If you like to investigate and experiment, or create and invent new things, Science Olympiad, a competitive team, may be what you are looking for.  Applications can be picked up at the Main Office or see Mr. Gamba in room 010.  Please see Mr. Gamba with any questions.  Students that join Science Olympiad will start preparing for a state-wide competition held in the spring.

First Dance of the Year
Tickets for our first school-wide dance (Friday, 10/27 6:00-8:00 p.m.) will be sold in homeroom from Monday, 10/23 to Wednesday, 10/25 during the week of the dance.  No tickets will be sold on Thursday or Friday.  Tickets are $6, and students must pay with the exact amount in cash or check made payable to Western Hills. Students may only purchase one ticket each, and the ticket purchased is not transferable.  No refunds will be given unless a student is absent from school on the day of the dance.  Students who are absent on the day of the dance are not permitted to attend.  Only Western Hills students are allowed to attend the dance.
Students who are ineligible may not purchase a ticket to the dance. If they attempt to so, they will face disciplinary action.
Because this is a Halloween-themed dance, students may wear costumes; however, costumes must meet the dress code and be appropriate for a school setting, cannot include masks or anything that covers the face (including make-up), and cannot include any type of weapon or replica of a weapon (this includes any objects that could be used as a weapon).

Sports
At this point, both soccer teams have one regular season game left and are then heading to the playoffs.  The boys are now 6-1-4 and the girls are 7-2-1.
The cross country team is winding down their season.  This past week they competed in the Division Championship.  The boys’ team took second in the team scoring and there were individual boys and girls that had great races.  There were 188 runners in the boys’ race and our top runner was Blake Santos, who took 2nd place overall.  Jayden Capuano finished 4th, Alex Phok 13th, Alex Lawton 14th, Henry Prendergast 18th, Jack Majcher 19th, and Patrick McDonough came in 20th.  In the girls race of 144 runners, Rachel Hobin came in 2nd.
The next race is the City Championship and it will be held on Monday at Roger Williams Park after school.  Finally, next Saturday, is the State Championship at Bryant University.

Have a great weekend!

Hello Western Hills Community,
I want to thank all of the parents that were able to attend Open House last week.  We appreciate you coming in and especially for enduring the heat!  We hope that it was enjoyable and informative.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Your feedback is always welcome.
There are a number of attachments with this email from the PTO.  Please take the time to look through them all, as our PTO works very hard to support the students of Western Hills Middle School.

Walkathon
Our biggest fundraiser of the year, the Walkathon, will be taking place on Friday, October 20 at the Cranston West track.  Please see the attachments for this very important event. We would greatly appreciate doing all that you can for this fundraiser.

5 Guys Fundraiser
Also attached to this email is the flyer for our 5 Guys fundraiser.  Please consider eating at 5 Guys (and bring along friends) on the dates listed on the flyer.

Flu Clinic
A flu clinic will be held at Western Hills Middle School on Wednesday, October 18 from 4-6:30 PM in the gymnasium. This clinic is open to anyone 3 years of age or older. You can register online at www.the wellcomp.com/school and your form will be sent directly to the clinic, or simply fill out a consent form when you arrive at the clinic. Although insurance will be collected, there is NO OUT-OF-POCKET cost for anyone regardless of whether or not they have health insurance.
We encourage all students, parents and grandparents to get vaccinated against flu.
For more information, visit www.health.ri.gov/flu or call the RI Department of Health information line at 401-222-5960.

Sports
The Fall sports season is in full swing with our soccer and cross country teams.  Our boys’ soccer team remains undefeated and will be facing Bain Middle School this afternoon.  The girls’ soccer team suffered this first defeat on Friday afternoon with a tough game against Warwick Vets.  I’m sure that Coach Edwards and the girls will be back with a vengeance at their next game!  Both the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams have been having great performances at the team level.  We have also had some outstanding individual performances as well.  This week, the Cobras will be heading to Coventry to take on division rival Feinstein Middle School (hmmm.... My two worlds are colliding...Should I wear Western Hills or Coventry gear to this race…?).

Opportunity for Parents and Guardians
The Rhode Island Association of School Principals (RIASP) is offering a program for parents and guardians titled, “Social Emotional Learning in the Home”.  Follow the link below for more information and to register for this event:

Hello Western Hills parents,
Just a few notes on Open House…
6th and 7th grade tonight (Wednesday), 8th grade tomorrow (Thursday); both begin at 6:30
Tonight, 6th grade parents (and 7th grade of the 6/7 split team only) will begin the night in the auditorium; 7th grade parents will begin with period 2 and end the night in the auditorium
Your child should have a copy of their schedule by now; please ask them for it
Many students have been texting a picture of their schedule to their parents - great idea in case it gets lost!
You can decide on which Unified Arts (UA) class you would like to see, however, not all UA teachers will be here for both nights.  You may want to have a backup class to go see
All PE/Health classes will meet in the gym
Intensive Reading teachers will be in the library
Readers’/Writers’ teachers will be in the following rooms - Mrs. Allison 232 (period 6), 215 (period 7); Mrs. Capaldi 015 (period 6), 013 (period 7)
Art - Ms. Budz (room 018) and Mrs. Brugnoli (room 016) will be here on Wednesday night and Mrs. Cox (016) will be here on Thursday night
Computers/Tech - Mr. Giorno will be here on both nights
I am looking forward to seeing all of you over the next two nights.
